No matter what type of air conditioner you have in your home, the air conditioner coils need to be cleaned regularly to avoid mold growth. The air conditioner coils also need to be cleaned right away if mold is present because mold will grow at a rapid rate and create permanent damage as well as health issues. This is especially true for those who have asthma or other allergies. When mold is left to grow in an air conditioner it can be spread throughout the home when the air is on. If there is high humidity in the home or surrounding area, the risk for growth and the speed at which it multiplies is much higher. Use the following cleaning tips to help in removing mold and preventing further accumulation.
1. Remove Filter
The first thing you need to do is remove the filter and determine whether it is washable or disposable. To clean the reusable ones, submerse the filter in warm, soapy water to soak while the rest of the unit is cleaned. For disposable filter types, dispose of the used filter appropriately.
2. Remove Grill, Cover, and Back Frame
Next, remove the grill and cover from the air conditioner, then, depending upon the type of unit, removing the back frame is the next step.
3. Clean the Inside
Now is time for general cleaning and removing any mold that is present. Vacuum away any loose debris and dust first. Then, spray your chosen spray cleaner onto the rag. Gently wipe away any dust, mold and accumulated water. Repeat the process until the unit is clean. If necessary, use the soft bristled cleaning brush to gently scrub away any stubborn mold or dirt.
Use a clean, warm rag to wash away any cleaning product. Clean up and thoroughly dry all parts of the coils and fins. If any pieces were bent during the cleaning process, reshape them.
4. Dry and Reassemble Unit
Before beginning the process of putting the air conditioner back together, be sure all parts are dry. This will help prevent mold from occurring again. Replace framing, air filter, and all other parts.
All air conditioner systems should be cleaned at least once per year. Make sure to clean thoroughly before you store the unit. Fix any leaks in your air system right away to prevent mold.
Attempting to perform DIY work on any air conditioner is not exactly recommended.
